Principal’s Update – 28 Sep 2020

Principal Mark Jones

Welcome and thank you from the College Principal

In any normal year, I would have already had the opportunity to say “Hello” and “Welcome to the College” as one of the many induction events that we have traditionally held in the first week of term across all of our 7 campuses.

But of course, this isn’t a normal year and therefore, can I take the opportunity to welcome you to the College for what I hope will not only be an enjoyable time for you, but ultimately will result in you achieving both the necessary qualifications and skills, as well as developing the skills and experience needed to allow you to progress onto that next exciting step of your education or career journey.

Our role at the College – indeed my role as Principal – is to provide you with the best teaching and support, as well as access to a full range of materials, equipment and facilities to allow you to achieve those highest grades and to prepare you for that next step – and that responsibility does not change, whether we are delivering face to face to students in the classroom or whether we are delivering a more “blended” approach of both face to face and online teaching as may well be the case later on in the year.

But before then, can I just reflect on the first few weeks of the new academic year – a few weeks very different from anything that we have experienced before and a College, in some regards, looks and feels very different.

A few weeks where all of the staff have been so impressed with the way that nearly all of our students have been so understanding and positive about the changes that have been necessary to reduce the risk of any transmission for students, staff and visitors alike – and so can I thank you all very much indeed.

Going forward, it is almost inevitable that further changes will be needed to respond not only to further challenges, but also, where we are able to “flex” the rules in light of students’ comments – and we trust that we will continue to have your ongoing support at all times.

The current “rules” are outlined below, but I would also take this opportunity to remind students to constantly check all of our various communication channels – TEAMs, Office 365, email, Student Portal, eNGAGE – as they are all being used to update and share updates in relation to your course, your lecturers and your course timetable.

Thank you once again – and please continue to work hard, so that with the College’s support, you can achieve all of the goals that you have set for yourself.
