Wednesday Sports Report (15th September)
The second week of sports fixtures were unfortunately heavily impacted by the announcement of stricter Covid precautions for colleges and schools and, with regret, the decision was made on Wednesday morning to cancel the netball and rugby 1st XV friendly matches v Coleg Gwent.
Football therefore was the focus of sporting activity for the College, with the first league game of the season for our 1st team in the AoC Premier League where we hosted Bridgewater College at Pontardawe Town’s home ground. With Bridgewater leaving well before decisions on the renewing of Covid controls were able to be communicated, the game was given the green light to proceed.
In an entertaining encounter both teams created chances throughout the game, although it is fair to say GCS very much dominated possession. Despite the team featuring a number of debutants, the GCS lads were showing their quality and were comfortable in sticking to their gameplan and carrying out their roles. Eventually GCS were able to assert themselves and despite a last minute goal from our visitors, Artiom Legavec’s (Level 3 Football Yr 1) two goals were enough to secure the three points for us. Notable mention also goes to Will Richards (AS Levels) who was excellent in the heart of the defence.
Final Score:
GCS 1sts 2 Bridgewater College 1
For our 2nd and 3rd football teams, similar to last week, a training game at Penyrheol was arranged to help in the selection process for whenever fixtures will be able to resume for each side. As things stand, unfortunately, college competitive fixtures are now on hold until controls can ease.
