Deaf Awareness Week
This week is Deaf Awareness Week! – An annual event that aims to raise awareness of the issues faced by the deaf community.
According to the UK Council on Deafness, over 11 million people in the UK are deaf or hard of hearing. That is 1 in 6 people – yet, many people still are unaware of the challenges faced by the deaf community.
One of the biggest issues facing the deaf community is communication. For those who are profoundly deaf in the UK, British Sign Language (BSL) is their first language. However, many people don’t know BSL, which can lead to feelings of isolation and exclusion for the deaf community.
So, how can we help? One of the best ways to support the deaf community is to learn BSL. There are many resources available online, such as free online courses and instructional videos. By learning BSL, we can make communication more accessible for the deaf community and help them feel less isolated.
