WEDNESDAY SPORTS REPORT (8 SEPTEMBER)
Sport returned on Wednesday and, for Netball and Mens Rugby, their first fixtures against other colleges for 18 months.
Our Netball squad travelled over the Loughor Bridge to play Coleg Sir Gar and thoroughly enjoyed their friendly game with with a heavy victory against their hosts. Both teams rotated squad players through the fixture getting as many players back into the swing of things but our girls really did quickly get into their stride with exciting attacking play – particularly considering this is a new group of players who haven’t played together before.
Mens Rugby 1st XV produced an absolutely outstanding performance in demolishing Bridgend College 54-7 at Loughor RFC in their opening league National Schools and Colleges League fixture. The hard work the rugby staff and players have put in since July seemed to pay off with a display of brave, running rugby and some outstanding off-loads and handling in a series of first half and second half tries.
In Mens Football, our 1st team frustratingly had their friendly fixture called off in the morning as the CAVC side had to pull out due to health and safety issues. Our current 2nds squad played a ‘possibles’ squad at Penyrheol and it was superb to see 30+ new college learners getting an opportunity to get involved in some enrichment activities so early in the term after the difficulties we have encountered this last year.
As weeks progress through September we hope to see a resumption of a wider range of sports and should tutors hear of learners wishing to play competitive sport and potentially represent their college please direct them to the following coaches please through Teams:
Netball: Sarah Lewis
Football: Richard South
Rugby: Dan Cluroe
Basketball: Tim Buckley
Womens rugby, womens football, hockey: Marcus Westmoreland
Athletics/swimming/other sports: (James) Marc Jones
Learners will need to be able to have Wednesday afternoons free on their timetable (or the opportunity to change groups to free up Wednesday).
