Meningitis Awareness

Gower College Swansea is aware of recent reports of a meningitis outbreak at the University of Kent. While there are currently no confirmed cases in Wales, we are working closely with health partners to keep learners informed, safe, and supported.

Swansea Bay University Health Board will be on campus next week to raise awareness, provide guidance, and offer vaccinations.

What is Meningitis?

Meningitis is a serious infection that affects the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord. It can develop quickly and requires urgent medical attention.

Symptoms to look out for

Meningitis symptoms can appear suddenly and may include:

  • High temperature (fever)

  • Severe headache

  • Stiff neck

  • Sensitivity to light

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Drowsiness or difficulty waking

  • Cold hands and feet, limb pain, pale or mottled skin

  • A rash that does not fade when pressed (glass test)

Early symptoms can feel like flu – don’t ignore them.

What should you do?

If you experience any of these symptoms:

  • Stay at home
  • Contact your GP or call NHS 111 immediately

Do not attend college until advised it is safe.
