Create & Join Societies

Colleges are a step in your future, they help you navigate and get you ready for University, jobs, or apprenticeships. But along with your work comes the experience at the college.

By joining these clubs they can reflect your true character to an employer, illustrate your time management skills and show your ability to be part of a team. Now you get to create the societies you want. Here are some ideas for you to start and remember, you can be as original as you’d like!

(Information on how to create a society is at the bottom of this article)

Debate Society

Do you have a passion for politics or a movement? Debate societies could be one of the most fun societies for you. They are one of the most popular societies in colleges.

For an employer, a debating society shows that you are respectful and can articulate your words well. Communication skills are important to any company therefore making yourself look more employable. And it’s great fun.

The Classics

Environmental Group, LGBTQ+ Group, Chess Club.

All of these are the typical groups that you can be a part of. But if you are organizing, you can do much more with help from organizations all around. For example, you could get a local environmental organization to help with building ideas for your Eco Society. You could get a local Chess Club to come in and teach members how to play chess, on a professional level, or at a beginner level.

There are lots of ways to make societies fun and productive!

Course-related society

What are you studying? There might be students who might be interested in the same things. With such a society, you could make it specialized. For example, if you are studying Media Studies, you could make a society in Video Production where at the end of the month, all the work is ranked to the top. Each time you could switch topics from short films to music videos.

This is just one example so remember that there is a lot, and I mean a lot of options that you could do. Lecturers might also be keen on helping you to start a society like this.

Simply, a hangout society

You could always just create/join a themed society just like the LGBTQ+ society. There might be people interested in the same passions as yourself and such a society could be a highlight of the week. There is a lot that you can do, so, be creative!

Whether you decide to create a society and become a leader or you join it. Remember to have fun, this year will pass quickly!

How to create a society

It’s actually quite simple. Send an email to Laimis.Lisauskas@gcs.ac.uk your Student Union President and tell him what your idea is. From there we can look to create your society.
