The Role of the Student Governor

The role of the Student Governor is to provide a learner perspective to the Corporation Board.

Your skills and attributes

  • You have an interest in the College and a passion to make the College the best College in Wales.
  • You are willing to be part of the Board ‘team’.
  • You must be willing to learn some of the complexities of running the College and governance.
  • You are confident in speaking up and putting forward ideas and views in an appropriate manner and are able to put forward the learner’s perspective.
  • You can listen and consider the views of others.
  • You can put aside your personal agenda and put forward the ‘view of the learner’ in the College, and act in the best interests of the College at all times
  • You can commit a couple of hours a month to preparing for and attending meetings.
  • You are expected to abide by all the governance policies and rules.

 

The views of the student member are important and the Board is interested to hear them, with Student members given specific opportunities to raise student matters in the Learner Support Committee.

The timetable and process is as follows:

  • The Student Governor role is open to all students full or part-time across all areas of study and all campuses;
  • Applications open on 5 October and close on 16 October 2020;
  • There will be one student appointed;
  • If there is more than one candidate there will be an election;
  • The election will run between 20 and 30 October 2020 with votes cast electronically;
  • The candidate with the highest number of votes will be put forward to the Board for appointment;
  • If the vote is tied the outcome will be decided by the toss of a coin;
  • If no applications are made by the initial deadline there will be an extension for applications of one week and a week’s extension to the election period;
  • The applicants will be informed of the outcome on the Monday following the close of polling;
  • The successful candidate will be invited to attend the first meeting following their election.

 

The Search and Governance Committee makes a recommendation on appointment to the Board.  The appointment is made for a period of one academic year.
