LGBTQ+ AND EDUCATION: SHARING STORIES

LGBTQ+ and educators: Sharing stories

There are an estimated 50,000 teachers that are LGBTQ+ within the UK, but only roughly 25,000 of these teachers are openly “out” within their profession.  The presence of LGBTQ+ teachers in schools can contribute to more inclusive learning environments. When students see teachers who reflect their own identities, it sends the message that diversity is not only accepted but also valued. This can help foster a sense of belonging and acceptance among LGBTQ+ students, reducing the likelihood of discrimination and promoting a positive school climate. Having LGBTQ+ teachers can be particularly empowering for LGBTQ+ students, being exposed to successful and respected individuals who share their sexual orientation or gender identity can inspire confidence. It provides young people with role models who have navigated similar challenges and achieved success in their chosen professions, demonstrating that being LGBTQ+ is not a barrier to success.

Unfortunately as mentioned above, a great number of teachers do not feel comfortable being “out” within their profession and this could be for a number of reasons but some attribute it to the lasting impact of Section 28, a controversial piece of legislation in the United Kingdom that had significant implications for the education system. It came into effect in 1988 and stated:

“A local authority shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality.”

This vague statement made many individuals uncomfortable about discussing any topics around homosexuality making it difficult for educators to provide support and information to LGBTQ+ students. Although it was abolished in 2003 in England Wales – it has had long standing impact on members of the teaching profession, particularly those that identify as LGBTQ+.

We believe it’s important to share stories about LGBTQ+ educators and have linked to articles below that provide insight into life as an LGBTQ+ educator. There is also a book called Courage in the Classroom that we have stocked in our Tycoch and Gorseinon campus Library catologue, which we would encourage you to have a read of.
